Push your MLIS Degree Mill somewhere else.

Reddit Thread
I came across the above offending Reddit ad last week.  At first glance I thought it was a joke, but then I clicked the link and realized it was for real and for Syracuse's iSchool.  Does the library field really need more MLIS degree holders?  Also, advertising on Reddit, really?

I usually am a lurker on Reddit, but I actually replied to the post to let it be known that this is not a good time to pursue an MLIS.  The "Greying of the Profession" is one of the worst conspiracies around and I will call it out every chance I get.

  1. I actually received my MSLIS from Syracuse's iSchool. While right after graduation I had a decent library job, a move forced me back to my hometown, and now I cannot get a library job to save my life. I finally had to go back to school to get a different MA in order for someone to hire me. I loved the school, but you are right, it is VERY hard to get a library job right now.

  2. Sorry to hear about your situation, I am in the same boat. I have a part-time position right now but cannot find a full time one. It is pretty ridiculous how these schools keep pumping out MLIS degrees like there isn't any problem in the job market.

  3. Move to Canada! I got a job before I had finished my degree. And a lot of my classmates fond a job within six month of graduating. But either way, good luck and I hope you find something that pleases you.

  4. Thanks 'Neighbor to the North'!
Desperation has not yet reached international proportions, but I could see myself in America Jr. or Australia.
